The Rev. Leon Sullivan Scholarship Application - 2023

The Bentley Leon Sullivan Scholarship Award is more than just a scholarship. It is an opportunity for young and inspired incoming ALANA students with financial need to experience the true meaning of “business ethics.” Students will work as interns at the W. Michael Hoffman Center for Business Ethics during their undergraduate years.

The Hoffman Center for Business Ethics annually offers two $7,500 scholarships to entering, need based, first-year ALANA students. This scholarship was funded by American Express in 1989 in honor of Rev. Leon H. Sullivan. Reverend Sullivan (who passed away on April 24, 2001) was a Baptist minister, a civil rights leader, and social activist focusing on the creation of job training opportunities for African-Americans, a longtime General Motors Board member, and an anti-Apartheid activist.

Recipients must meet the following terms in order to maintain eligibility:

    • Register full-time each term and maintain a 3.0 GPA
    • Complete one of the following three business ethics courses: PH130, PH131, or PH133, and one other ethics-focused course
    • Assist in the general operations of the Hoffman Center for Business Ethics, which involves a seven-hour work commitment per week
    • Submit to the Hoffman Center for Business Ethics Executive Director a short (one-to two-page) final report describing your HCBE involvement at the close of each academic year
    • Submit a letter of appreciation to the Leon Sullivan Family (Financial Assistance will notify you of details regarding this requirement)

Recipients maintaining eligibility will receive a minimum $30,000 during their four years as an undergraduate at Bentley University. Scholarship eligibility ends when a recipient does not meet the conditions specified above, or is no longer enrolled as an undergraduate, or no longer has sufficient financial need. Students receiving need-based financial aid will have their package adjusted so that the Sullivan Scholarship will replace the Self-Help portion (Federal Direct Subsidized Loan and Federal Work-Study). For students with Self-Help levels less than $7,500, the scholarship amount in excess of the Self-Help total will replace Bentley Grant, if any.
